About the Author: Stefan Joubert

Stefan Joubert manager of London Guitar Institute is passionate about adult education. He believes that absolutely anyone can learn to play the guitar and it is just a matter of getting good education and getting started.

If you want to become the guitarist that you have always dreamed of becoming, you simply have to raise your standards! Raising your standards means doing more than you have done in the past in order to achieve a higher goal.

I personally get frustrated at times when I see an individual develop their guitar playing but fall short due to a lack of discipline and self-motivation.

I know that private practice done in a meticulous and disciplined manner will always produce the best guitarist in the long haul.

There is no amount of talent that can beat sheer hard work. And when I say hard work, I don’t mean frustrating work. I mean hard work that you love!

Have you ever asked yourself the following question – how would I feel if I can raise my guitar playing by 30% in the next year or by 50% in the next year? Or even become double of what I am today. Or Triple, or EVEN Quadruple!

Chances are, you will be extremely satisfied with yourself.

The truth is, you can achieve these goals, but you do need to put in the time and effort required.

You do need to spend time. Perhaps you need to book an intense guitar course and get top-notch education from a master for 3 to 4 hours a day for two or three weeks.

I’m a firm believer in deep and lasting immersion. The only way I can change your guitar playing is by pushing yourself so hard that you’ll never forget it.

Nothing beats a great education, and that is definitely the first route to take.

In addition to the above, I also advise doing the following:

  • Practice slowly with a metronome at about 40 bpm
  • Conquer the impossible by using repetition. Often in my lessons, I would ask a student to repeat the same passage 30 times.
  • Start believing THAT EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE. Yes, you might not get there overnight, but with practice and repetition success will be yours.
  • Open up a spreadsheet and track your progress. Only track one scale or arpeggio/sweep. If you track many things, you get diversification and I hate the diversification. It will simply divert you! Track a few things, but check them every 2 to 3 days.
  • To emphasis the point above even more – There is a definite rule – “Everything that you will measure will grow”. Measure/track and see fast improvement!
  • Book out a Saturday with yourself and spend seven hours with your guitar. It may seem crazy, but imagine how you will play after the 7 hours are done… a whole lot better than before!

The truth is, your level of guitar playing comes down to your dedication to the instrument.

If you want to become a monster guitarist, nothing can stop you.

Nothing but you. And it is the “YOU” that needs to change. When you change, your guitar playing will change.

You are in total control of your development.

You decide how fast… you decide how slow…

If you are very frustrated, maybe it is time to make a change and become that amazing guitarist that you deserve to be.

Do come and see me in my studio in Central London, I will genuinely help you with this amazing journey that you are on.

In fact, I’m so confident as to say that if you do everything that I recommend, YOU WILL BECOME a monster guitarist.

The ball is in your court – it’s up to you to take the next step!
